Children’s Costumes that Encourage

Heroes.

Children love to dress up.  Give them a super hero costume, a princess, or a pair of scrubs with a stethoscope and they can play for hours and weeks.  It is a fun use of their time and excellent for sparking their imagination. Now with Halloween nearing, parents and kids alike are looking for fun ideas for costumes.

It’s a fun escape for children, and many adults as well.  These days with the stress in our lives, it seems extra fun to escape and pretend?

If we are going to encourage young imaginations, this year why not encourage something positive and uplifting  for your young ones? Little ones are darling in animal costumes of course.  Is there is a child around who doesn’t love Scooby Doo, no matter what their age. This might be just the costume for that child!

Scooby or similar may be off the table as they get a little bit older.  Still, instead of scary monsters, vampires, axe murderers, or whatever the trending monster, why not try some of the ideas below?

Scooby – Doo Child’s Deluxe Scooby Costume, Small

For many of them you can find pre-made costumes.  So many of the outfits you can use year round.  My niece dresses as a princess an many days as permitted, long dress or frilly skirt, and all.

There is a wonderful variety available. Whether you prefer a complete costume or particular pieces to create your own, you will find them here.

Most Popular

Perhaps the most popular are fireman, princess, and astronaut.  Perennially admired by children, you can get complete costumes for most sizes.  You can check out some of our favorite ideas right here.

              Princess     Doctor      Fireman     Astronaut

You can find decked out costumes for a veterinarian, policeman, and many others.  But if you choose to put together a costume yourself, look how easily it can be done.

Create your own for fun and something different

Nurse  A set of scrubs, a paper hat and shoe covers, perhaps a stethoscope, and you are set to be a nurse.  Or you can go for a white uniform and a cute nurses hat.  Many of the costumes including scrubs are available with the hats, shoes, and masks.

A Scientist is another easy one.  Einstein wig, lab coat,  wire frame glasses. You can choose a crazed look or a studious one.

An Angel needs wings and a halo, easily fashioned from wire and decorated with netting and glitter.  Wear with a pale, frilly dress for a sweet look.

Construction worker work boots, a hard hat, and lots of denim.  A tool belt is a nice touch.

To be a Soldier, grab some cammies, a hard hat painted a flat tan, black face paint so the sun doesn’t catch their skin

So many kids look up to their Teacher.   While this one may be an old-fashioned stereotype, how about dark framed spectacles, hair pulled back in  a bun, An old fashioned dress or skirt.  For a boy, an elbow patched tweed coat.

Chef  A white apron, a chef hat, dark pants, perhaps a long twisted mustache.

Train engineer Overalls, that engineer cap, and a whistle.

Even superheroes can be created easily at home. First fabric for the trusty cape.  Add tights or leggings in the appropriate color.  Cut an emblem out from a colored fabric, felt for instance, and sew or glue it to a t-shirt.  A wide bright belt ties it together.  If you don’t feel like making the cape, check this one out for multi purpose use.

Don’t Forget Safety

On any costume I hope you will consider adding a stripe here and there of safety tape.  You can get it in a variety of colors that will blend and fit with your costume. Since it is reflective, it will provide extra safety for your trick-or-treater as they rush from house to house in the dark.  Besides the safety tape, light sticks are fun for kids to carry around for safety.  You can get a batch below to share with their friends.  The more light a car sees, the safer the children.

  1. My son loved costumes and his favorite was Pert Pan – I recently found an old video of him playing and he was flying and sword fighting and singing what wonderful memories. His pirate costume was brill too. No doubt that costumes make wonderful gifts for children.

    • Thank you Giovanna! Kids surely love dress up. Do they celebrate in a similar fashion in England?
