Chocolate Teddy Bears Delight Everyone!

These Chocolate Teddy Bear Cookies not only are fun to make and cute, but they’re yummy too. If you’re a chocoholic these cookies satisfy that “gotta have chocolate” urge. If you need something to get you in the mood for Christmas, try making these little guys with your kids. They will have so much fun putting these cookies together, you’ll think they’ll never get baked. But they do, and boy are they good! I get a little nostalgic when I share this recipe for Chocolate Teddy Bears, because I made them for my very first grandchildren back in the 80s. Since they’re easy to make, I hope many of you will try them for your family this Christmas, or whenever the mood strikes. So, if you haven’t had your chocolate today, (or even if you have, I won’t tell!) this is a great way to enjoy it.

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.

This is an extremely easy recipe, and there’s not a lot to do to mix it up. But the fun starts after you’ve got the dough mixed and properly chilled. Assembling these little bears is a fun family activity. You may come up with other ways of decorating them too, with chocolate chips, peppermint or cinnamon candies. Experiment with various ways, both before and after baking and see what you can create.

Chocolate Teddy Bears Recipe


Serves: 14 cookies

  • ⅔ cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2& ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  1. In a large mixer bowl, beat together butter, sugar and vanilla extract until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs and blend well.
  3. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. Gradually add this to the butter mixture, blending thoroughly.
  4. Refrigerate until dough is firm enough to handle easily. This is an important step to managing the dough, so don't leave it out.
  5. When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  6. Using a cookie scoop for the larger portions and your hands, shape teddy bears like this; roll a portion of dough into one large ball for the body (approximately 1 to 1&1/2-inches, 1 medium size ball for head (3/4 to 1-inch), 4 small balls for the arms and legs (1/2-inch), shape 2 small pinches of dough into balls for ears, shape 1 tiny pinch of dough into ball for nose and 4 tiny balls for paw pads (optional).
  7. Place each bear's body on an ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten tummy slightly with your fingers.
  8. Attach medium sized dough ball for head by overlapping onto body.
  9. Attach small dough balls for arms, legs and ears, and a tiny dough ball on head for nose. Arrange other tiny balls of dough on ends of legs and arms for paws, if desired. Make sure all parts are firmly attached before baking.
  10. With a wooden toothpick, draw eyes and curved mouth before putting them in the oven.
  11. Bake six to eight minutes or until set; don't overbake.
  12. Cool for 1 minute; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely.
  13. Store in a covered container.
  14. Tie a tiny bow around each bear's neck if desired.

Try This To Use These Bears For Ornaments

Chocolate Teddy Bears can be used as ornaments if you’d like. Just pierce a small hole in the top of the head before baking. After they’re cooled, gently pull a narrow ribbon or yarn through the hole to hang the ornament. Allow them to cool for about 4 hours like this before hanging them on the tree. In this state, they are still edible, so be careful with your pets. But kids will love being able to pick one off the tree and eat it.

Author’s Note: I sent these to my grandchildren when they were little and lived in another state. Most of them arrived in good condition as they are pretty hardy cookies. My daughter thought they were so cute, she couldn’t bear to part with all of them, so she pulled out a few and kept them for years, by dipping them in Polyacrylic. Please know if you do this, they won’t last forever and will eventually crumble away, but that just gives you an excuse to make another batch!

Coffee makes it possible to get out of bed, but chocolate makes it worthwhile.

Put “Eat Chocolate” at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you’ll get one thing done.

If you can’t eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can’t eat all your chocolate, what’s wrong with you?
