New! The Christopher Matheson Mystery Series

Here’s another instant hit for bestselling author Lauren Carr.  The disappearance of a young girl has branded Chris Matheson a killer for most of his adult life, though never convicted of a crime.  After so many years is it possible to find what really happened to her?

The title actually does reveal the nature of the first installment of this new series by best-selling author, Lauren, Carr. The story (and future stories) revolves around a cold case. So cold that it is icy. Ms. Carr very cleverly reveals why sometimes ice is better than cold in the entertaining mystery.

Former Special Agent Chris Matheson is now retired from the FBI. Returning home was not an easy thing since many years ago he left with a shadow over his head. He was the prime suspect for the murder of young Sandy Lipton, a woman who they discovered was pregnant. While never charged, the town has been convinced of his guilt ever since.

The Book Club

When invited to join a local book club, he has no idea what he is getting into. First the other members are also former law enforcement. Secondly, they may read books, but the members are more interested in investigating cold cases. The Sandy Lipton murder becomes their number one focus.

Soon there are more bodies.  Could they all be connected to their search Sandy’s killer? Will one of them be next?  Unraveling the clues they find could put them right in the path of a murderer.

I so admire author Lauren Carr for her various series. Each comes from a different angle, part of this one being cold case murders. Of course the members of the very unique book club, add distinction too. Each brings his/her own talents to the table, each with plenty of connections and contacts to aid in their searches.

The supporting cast is fabulous as well, from his good friend, Helen, with the State Police, to his strong and surprising mother and his active children. It will be a kick to learn more about them as the series develop. It will also be fun to see potential relationships grow.

Don’t Forget The Dogs

As with Ms. Carr’s other series, dogs are featured throughout the stories, playing very important roles at times. This one features German shepherd, Sterling, a former police dog who was wounded in action and now retired as well. Don’t be surprised if Sterling comes to the rescue when necessary. The dog has skills.

Of course the animals add humor to the story. So does the dialogue. Even in the midst of a murder investigation, you’ll find smiles and chuckles along the way. It makes for an easy, light read, in spite of the subject—a great way to enjoy a solid mystery.

The new series is considered a cozy mystery, at least in some ways. You won’t find elicit sex, bad language, and descriptive violence, but don’t let that fool you. The bodies pile up in this one quickly, with a number of suspects. As expected from this fine author, you will find twists and turns that will have you turning in completely different directions during the story.

Is a serial killer at work? Might it be the same killer as that of Chris’ cold case investigation? So many questions. Will they find answers before Chris himself is the target?

The Audiobook

It was a delight to listen to the audiobook for my review. It’s a pleasure to listen while the narrator brings the story and the characters to life. Audiobooks let you get caught up in the story as if you were there.

Narrator Mike Alger does so well at distinguishing the voices of the many characters. Quite a task with so many! His pacing flows as you would read, so it sounds natural.

Definitely the series should be another hit for this popular author. Don’t miss it!

The Series

Be sure to check out her other continuing series as well: The MacFarraday series, The Joshua Thornton series, The Lovers in Crime series, and the Thorny Rose series. These overlap characters in a fantastic way that will keep you coming back for more and more. You can start anywhere, since each is a stand alone, but if you want to go to the beginning, I’ve included a link to each at the end.

Add Lauren Carr to your Favorite Author List. You’ll be glad you did.
