Kill and Run, by Lauren Carr: A Review

We are pleased to be a part of Lauren Carr’s virtual book tour for Kill and Run, sponsored by iRead Book Tours.  The tour began August 31st and runs through October 6th.  That means Ms. Carr has been keeping a very busy schedule. Here’s our review of her latest soon-to-be-bestseller!

Kill and Run, by Lauren Carr

If you are a fan of mystery suspense thrillers, you won’t want to miss the latest book from Lauren Carr.  Kill and Run  opens a whole new world for Ms. Carr, and an exciting one it is!  Yet it is one where we will get to see visits from other series characters that we know and love.

Author, Lauren Carr, has upped the tension and the thrills in this series.  We were given glimpses of it in Three Days to Forever.  More tension, more romance, more surprises (or shocks), more intrigue, even more bodies, and as always, lots of suspects to consider.

The change of scene from the small town in Maryland to Washington DC is the first dramatic difference. We all imagine what goes on in DC between politics, lobbying, deal making, and manipulation.  It’s a high pressure, watch-your-back setting, where most everyone has their own hidden agenda along with their own secrets.

The Story

That is exactly where our new hero,  Navy Lt. Murphy Thornton, has landed with his new assignment.  Serving in the Pentagon as NCIS liaison between military and civilian law enforcement, he and his new wife, Jessica, are settling into their new life.  Until he gets a call about five murdered women.

Kill and Run presents an intricate plot that combines a cold case–one that is very personal–with a multiple murder.  What do they have in common?  Terrorism?  Crime lords? Politics?  Or might it be something closer to Murphy and his family?

The investigation threatens more lives the deeper into it they get.  And several, including his own immediate superior, want Murphy stopped.  Why are the top brass trying to keep Murphy from the truth?

There is someone who will allow no on to get in his way, no mater what the cost to others. It is definitely a suspense thriller you won’t want to end!

The Characters Shine

I instantly liked both Murphy and Jessica.  It’s clear we are going to get quite attached to both.  Smart, capable, young, and enthusiastic, the two are adjusting to their rather sudden marriage, growing into a couple as they get to know each other.  Both are well portrayed, as are the adjustments they have to make.  Since the series is brand new, we get to watch the character development right from the start. That suits the story and the readers.

Murphy’s father, Josh Thornton and his new wife, homicide detective, Cameron Gates, join the story in an unexpected and satisfying way.  Then there is a lonely little girl named Izzy and Jessica’s brother, Tristan.  Murphy’s fellow officers and his chain of command add interest, some very likable, some not so much.  They all contribute to the story.

Actually, it seems like half of them descend upon the newlyweds!  Not to mention the pets that abound.  Dogs, cats, and we mustn’t forget Monique.  All are cause to smile.

For Your Consideration

I won’t tell you more about the plot.  You need to read the book to follow the twists the book takes.  It does leave you wondering though.  In a place where power is priority, is anyone immune to its seduction?

Kill and Run is a wonderful new series, and probably my new favorite by Ms. Carr.  Read it and enjoy.  Nicely done, Lauren!
