Hot dogs: Pups in a Pocket

 Hot Dogs!

Most of us in the United States grew up eating hot dogs, one way or another, didn’t we? We’d eat them raw, dipped in mustard or ketchup, barbecued, in a bun, or pretty much any way they were served. They always taste like summer to me.

But sometimes, you want those dogs to impress, to be an dining adventure, as well as to satisfy. That’s why I decided to try these out. Little twin hot dogs, snuggled into a tortilla pocket. Tortillas are always available in our house. Beans too. You can use any kind of beans that you like. I used baked beans for this batch but chili is great with hot dogs too. Wouldn’t kids enjoy them like this too?

The hot dogs pictured here are turkey franks, but of course, any kind will work. If you get the large size dogs, you may want to halve them and put the halves side by side. Then you would only need four hot dogs.

They taste delicious and look rather cute, I think! Plus, everything seems to taste good in a tortilla. You can pick them up to eat them if you are brave. The hold together surprisingly well.

Of course, if the goal is to impress, a knife and form will be more to your liking. Either way they bring back fond memories of vacations, bar-b-ques, and camping. That is always good for a smile!

This recipe was created for a contest to find unique ways to serve hot dogs.  How would you make yours?

  4. Pour ¼ cup (or to taste) beans over the dogs, leaving the top portion uncovered.
  5. Fold up bottom edge of the tortilla, then fold in the sides, pressing so it will hold.
  6. Sprinkle a little cheese on top and on the seam. This will help keep it in place.
  7. Warm in oven or microwave until cheese is melted.
  8. Serve hot as it is, or with an additional scoop of beans.

Hot Dogs, No Matter how you Make Them

So many hot dogs, so many way to serve them. It seems they are a requirement practically at ballgames. Have you noticed they even taste better there sometimes? Here are a few other ways you might try them:

  • The traditional hot dog in a bun, with mustard, ketchup, relish, onion is optional
  • A chili dog with cheese
  • A hot dog with sauerkraut and mustard
  • Cut up dogs with beans
  • Cut up dogs with eggs
  • Cut up dogs with macaroni and cheese
  • Barbecued for dipping
  • Barbecues, sliced with a mustard ketchup dip
  • Fried and sliced onto a hamburger bun

And of course, there are so many kinds! All beef, regular, extra long, extra big, almost sausage sized, turkey, and vegetarian.

If ingredients matter to you, hot dogs would be a good item to compare. Some will have much higher fat and sodium contents than others.

Nevertheless, no matter how you like them, they will always be an American tradition.

Haute Dogs, the Book

The book that inspired this lens. You can read the interesting interview above as well. Who says a hot dog should only be served with the traditional toppings. There are so many options, beautifully pictured in this terrific book.
