A Review of The Final Cut, by Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison

A Brit in the FBI

In the beginning of a new series, Catherine Coulter, co-writing with J. T. Ellison, introduces Nick Drummond of Scotland Yard, and FBI Agent, Michaela (Mike) Kane.  If you are fans of Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock, don’t fear.  They are not only still featured in their own continuing series, they show up often in The Final Cut as well.

The series is named, “A Brit in FBI.”  It will be an interesting basis for the new enjoyable books.   I liked both the characters and the story. It was a solid murder mystery with a complete plot centered around the queen mother’s crown jewels. Both characters are likable, determined and skilled at what they do.  Nick was formerly a spy, which brings an extra edge to his character.

The Story

Fellow agent Elaine York is on assignment in New York to protect the queen mother’s Crown Jewels to be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  When she is found murdered Nick disobeys orders and heads to New York immediately to search for her killer. Mike Kane is assigned to meet him and to bring him in to the investigation.

What starts as a murder investigation, threatens to become an international incident when somehow the grandest of the Crown Jewels is stolen.  The race to find the Koh-i-Noor diamond, a 105-carat gem becomes even more urgent than finding the killer, though the two just might turn out to be the same.

Ownership of the gem has been disputed for decades.  Now suddenly everyone seems to want it for their own reasons.  Greed, power, even the supernatural.  Is the theft meant to cause a rift between the United States and England, or is it more personal than that?

Nick and Mike are up against a master thief who manages to stay a step ahead of everyone after her.  At the same time, the two of them begin to care about each other. There is a good possibility their romance will be a part of the series, to be included in coming novels.  The two work well together, with very enjoyable dialogue.

Of course, it is always a pleasure to visit Sherlock and Savich as well. Their special talents and their fun relationship always add to the story.  I imagine they will come and go in future books too, since the four of them will be working together.

The only con I have to say about The Final Cut, is that I found it slowed in places.  Generally that was the time spent explaining the history of some characters. While interesting, it distracted me, since I was anxious to get on with the mystery.  That said, I am looking forward to reading book two.

The Authors

J. T. Ellison has thirteen novels published, including the award winning Taylor Jackson Series.  Mystery thrillers and romantic suspense both sound good.   I’m looking forward to reading more of Ms. Ellison.

With nineteen novels in the acclaimed FBI Thriller series, and a total of seventy-five books published, Catherine Coulter is a well known popular mystery thriller author.  The romance she has included, especially between Lacey Sherlock and Dillon Savich is a bonus in her mysteries.  Very likable characters in suspense filled stories.

Book 2 in the Brit in the FBI Series…The Lost Key

A stabbing on Wall Street brings the first case to new FBI agent Nick Drummond and his partner Mike Kane.  Their investigation reveals that the murdered antiquities dealer was doing much more that buying and selling old books.

Drawn into a hunt for the dead man’s missing children AND gold bullion missing since World War 1,  they will face an industrialist to has his own deadly plans for the gold.

The book has hair raising tension, James Bond like action, and conditions so realistic you will wonder if it is based on fact.  Aren’t those the best kind?

Coming Soon…Book 3…The End Game

This one sounds even more exciting than the first two!  Nick and Mike are investigating a dangerous group called the Celebrants of the Earth, a group responsible for bombing power sources around the country.

Even as more bombs go off, the COE remains ahead of the FBI.  What they are planning goes far beyond refineries and power grids.  They plan to assassinate the President of the United States.  Apparently this story brings in Mossad, MI-5, the CIA, the secret service and Savich and Sherlock.  It sounds like the authors are stepping up another notch.

Looking forward to it!
