The Question: R. Breuer Stearns.
When I first received a review copy of this book, I was intrigued by the quote on the front cover. This is ‘if you could have the answer to only one question, what would you ask?’
This in itself made me want to read this book (after pondering the question posed for a while) and I’m so pleased that I did. I know it’s a well-worn phrase that has been done to death, but I truly did want to keep turning the pages and reading.
This novel explores concepts that you’re inevitably going to find fascinating. For example, can two people studying a problem find the solution as opposed to one person trying to do so alone? And if that’s the case, what if a hundred people are asking that question,or a thousand —or even a million?
But I don’t want you to think that this is a book featuring abstract and complex problems. It’s an enthralling read and the author has injected his own special humour into the situations that are explored within the pages.
The plot
Nate Heartnell discovers that his work triggers off a tentative theory in his own mind. How does problem solving really work? When quick and important decisions have to be made in life-and-death situations, where is the logic? How are problems solved? It appears that his studies show that two minds are certainly greater than one.
Taking this hypothesis, Nate wants to explore this phenomenon. He’s sure that he knows how to get to the truth about certain problems. And if two minds can work better than one, what will happen if he orchestrates many more minds simultaneously looking for the truth?
But what question should be asked?
My own writing skills are not adequate enough to describe this fantasy novel further without revealing more so I heartily recommend this novel as a thought-provoker and a completely enjoyable read. It’s fabulously written with tightly-created characters.
Read this book and enjoy the story — or if you prefer, ponder the deeper issues that are explored. Either way, I hope you enjoy this novel as much as I did. It’s the sort of book that you’ll remember for a long time to come.
Tip! A curious but wonderful character in the book is Jake. You’ll meet him in the very first chapter.
Enjoy!
