How far do you walk in the average day?

kitchenA recent study in the UK has shown that  people walk over sixty miles per year in their kitchens.

When health authorities tell us that we should walk 10,000 steps per day in order to keep fit, it’s surprising that quite chunk of that is used up in the kitchen.

We may be nearer to our goal than we thought.

This was calculated by asking a group of people to wear pedometers to measure the number of steps they took.

This make me wonder something:

Would we walk further if our steps were being monitored?

I strongly suspect that we would – even if the number of steps is only being monitored by ourselves.

This is why I believe that a pedometer is a great idea.

Most people are by nature competitive. If your pedometer showed that you took a certain number of steps today, wouldn’t you want to do better tomorrow?

This is such a simple way to increase your fitness level. It’s a small personal challenge that we can set for ourselves – no-one need know.

Starting a fitness regime can be setting yourself up for failure. If you commit to going to a gym three times a week,or playing tennis, will you really?

That’s the sort of thing that I tend to give up in no time.

But by wearing a pedometer,you can continue with your normal daily life, just determining to walk a few more steps tomorrow that you did today. This is something even I can do!

Pedometers are pretty advanced technology today and they’re inexpensive to buy. And isn’t it lovely to think that we are getting fitter simply by walking? Especially when we’re just pottering around the kitchen.

Hmm, just as long as we don’t undo all our hard work and eat too much while we’re in there.

  2. It’s funny that you wrote about this. I’m participating in a study where I’m to wear a pedometer of sorts for a week. I went ahead and put my own on so that I can see my daily steps, and I’ve been taking some extra steps to keep the count going. Good idea!
