Who are we, really?
When delving into Sci-Fi, the reader should be allowed to spin perspective and see themselves and the world they inhabit from a completely different angle. Some authors do this with horror, death, destruction or brutality: when faced with calamities the reader needs to twist mindset to avoid being too affected and, in so doing, they see the horror from a new perspective. How else could you watch or read about the death meted out in the War of the Worlds?
My way of showing that perspective change and allowing the reader a new insight into what may be, has been or perhaps always was, is to tell a linear story based on available science and fact and then let a plot extrapolate events into the possible, fantastic though it may be.
Reaching Angelica and the prequel The Path are all about the human condition, the human mind-set. The need for exploration overlaid always with the desire to survive and, yes, rest on one’s laurels. It is only when resting on one’s laurels that things begin to unravel. Then the good and bad in humanity quickly becomes apparent.
In the Tag series, the reluctant hero (well, more of a bumbling hero actually), plots a course as best he can and, in the end, it is only through connectedness, love, friendship that anyone can survive. He learns (as does the reader) that those qualities are really who we are and must hold on to.
