I Couldn’t NOT Write this Book

By Randy Haveson

Ever have that feeling that you were born to do a certain thing? Everything in your life has led you to a time and place where the voice in your head says, “Ok, now!” Well, that’s what happened with Party with a Plan.

I wanted to be a therapist. I wanted to help people. You see, back in high school I made some poor choices and when I got to college, those problems skyrocketed. I have been expelled from college twice, fired from jobs like pizza delivery, t-shirt screener, liquor store delivery, drummer in a rock band, and others I can barely remember. The reason, I’m a drug addict and alcoholic. Of course it was always everyone else’s fault or just “bad luck” that these things were happening to me, but finally I realized the problem was me and I reached out for help. That was in 1984 and I’ve been sober ever since.

I went back to college and got my BA in psychology and MA in counseling. I knew that my life was a gift. I knew too many people who were dead or in jail. There was a reason I was still here and had more than a few brain cells still functioning. I thought it was so I could be a counselor, but in my heart I knew that I wanted to reach more people than that, so I become a speaker. I created a presentation called Party with a Plan® that talked about my downward spiral, how I hit bottom, how I cleaned myself up, and how to avoid the path I had walked.

For years people told me to write the book, but at that time my undiagnosed ADD was not allowing me to sit and write a book. When I finally did get my diagnosis, and my medication, the book just poured out of me. Today I have three books, all of them Party with a Plan; one is for college students, one for women, and other for anyone who chooses to drink. And yes, there will be others in the future. I love writing! And I’m not ashamed of my addiction or my ADD. It’s just a part of who I am.

The premise of Party with a Plan is that I wanted to teach people how to use alcohol in a low-risk way. I was tired of “be responsible” because it can be defined in too many different ways. I wanted to find a formula that made sense and was easy to follow. So I did years of research and came up with the Party with a Plan® low-risk guidelines. Basically, I have created the equivalent of a speed limit for drinking. We all know that if you stick to the speed limit, your chance of getting in trouble is low. However, the more you go over the speed limit, and the more often you go over the speed limit, the more you put yourself and others at risk. I know, right? It makes sense!

This is my calling and I am so grateful to have this opportunity. My hope for you is that you find your calling and help make the word a better place in your own way.

The Tour

 Book Description:

Finally! Here is a proven, practical way to drink alcohol and lower your risk for problems. Up until now, there have been two primary messages when it comes to drinking alcohol. One is “just say no,” which for the majority of the population is not an option. The other is to “drink responsibly.” But what does that mean?
If you ask five random people to define responsible drinking, you will most likely get five completely different answers. This invalidates the term because it can be defined in so many different ways. Party with a Plan® gives a concise and research based formula that teaches people how to drink and lower their risk of negative consequences. It’s like creating a speed limit for drinking. If you stick to the speed limit, your chance of problems is minimal. However, the more you go over the speed limit, and the more often you go over the speed limit, the more you put yourself and others at risk. This book is long overdue!
