Book Review: A Wedding and a Killing, by Lauren Carr

Murder interferes with Archie and Mac’s attempt to get married in this entry to the Mac Faraday series. In church for a quiet ceremony, Gnarly alerts the attendants to a body. Mac assures Archie they will wrap it up quickly. It looks like he might be right when a man comes to the police station to confess. Before they can interview him, there are two more confessions. Why is everyone so anxious to claim responsibility?

The past and present collide when a man is murdered in the church office. There to count the offering money, the trustee had been shot.  Yet no money was taken.  Fingerprints turn up the name of a woman wanted for the murder of her husband in New York several years ago.

Suspect nabbed? Could it be that easy?  Not after Mac hears her story.  From there the plot does indeed thicken.

Are the two murders related?

We have another church trustee who wants to be the one to control the money.  How far would she go?  Suspicion grows when that same trustee leaves town before she can be questioned.

Or there is a local politician who wants to shut down the church for his own reasons.  For the good of his district?  Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Don’t overlook the wealthy widow who books a cruise the day after her husband is killed.  The question there is how did her husband come by all that money.

Police corruption, bribery, undue influence, framing an innocent person. adultery, more bribery, greed, jealousy, embezzlement—those should be motive enough.  From New York to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Mac and Archie, David, and of course, Gnarly, will cover a lot of ground to find answers.  When you have so many who are guilty of something, narrowing the field can be increasingly difficult.

Then another body is discovered.

As always with Lauren Carr’s mysteries, there is an vast assortment of suspects.  With rumors flying of affairs, theft, and corruption—just within the little church—it could lead anywhere.  You will have to read along to see where Ms. Carr leads us this time around.

A Wedding and a Killing is the eighth book in the bestselling Mac Faraday series.  Very likable characters, complicated plots, a little romance, and a dog named Gnarly, all come together for an always enjoyable read!  Next up…Three Days to Murder.

By the way, don’t miss the special bonus short story at the end of the book.  Gnarly is dognapped.  You know that can’t turn out well.
