Since publishing the article here on Jaquo about Robert Crais’ upcoming novel, The Promise , It seemed fitting to recommend the book that first introduced me to Mr. Crais’ and his excellent books.
That book would be Suspect. It is still one of my favorite books.
Robert Crais is the author of the wonderful private detective series featuring Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. There are more than ten in that series so far. Besides that he has written several other stand alone novels. To be fair they are all stand alone, but once I know there is a series, I am compelled to start at the beginning. I enjoy seeing the characters grow, getting to know them better, see who is recurring.
Joe Pike and Elvis Cole are two I would enjoying having dinner with. What a great team they make.
Still, the author hadn’t caught my attention until I read about Suspect, the new book with new characters. The cover features a dog, overlooking the city of Los Angeles. By the time I finished the summary, I knew I had to read the book. In my case, I actually listened to the book. That was another reason I had to try the author. On Audible alone there are more than 4400 ratings and reviews for an average of 4.3 out of 5 stars. That is a lot of reviews for a book, audio or otherwise. Add it Amazon’s reviews over 1700, and I had to see what all the praise was about.
You can read my full review of the book here
To sum it up very briefly, it features a policeman, wounded in action when his partner is killed. Along with him is a German shepherd, a military dog also wounded in action when her partner is killed. Whether either of them can ever work again is part of the story. Whether they can become partners—or pack—is another. While they try, they investigate his partner’s murder as they train and learn to trust each other.
It is a wonderful book, one I wish everyone would read! The healing they experience, the bond they need to form to trust each other, the training, is all very well described. I bet you will be cheering for them on the sidelines.
If you get the chance, read Suspect before the next book comes out. In The Promise, Elvis and Cole will be included, along with the two new characters so well featured here in Suspect. I can’t wait for it to get here! It should be an exciting and funny read to have the four of them together.

This is awesome Merry! I love it when the books are available for me at the Library for the blind. The website has 21 of Robert Crais books including Suspect! I had started to get into mysteries a couple of years ago. My daughter was getting them from her job at the Library for me on CD what was not available in the blind library. I just finished the 15th book of the Dresden Files, the books are mysteries in a way. I cannot wait to get started on this series. I will look it up to see where to begin. Thanks for an awesome review [s].
