The Sun newspaper publishes page three topless photo
On 20th January, 2015 I wrote – as did thousands of other people in the world – that the Sun newspaper had decided to stop publishing its regular ‘page three’ feature. That is, photographs of topless girls.
There had been campaigns and questions. There were those who thought that breasts were somehow ‘indecent’ and shouldn’t be published in a newspaper.
I, along with many people – who were mostly women,incidentally – disagreed. Here’s my rant.
You see,I don’t think that breasts are anything to be ashamed of. Strangely. The Sun has never been exactly what you’d called a quality paper and if its readers want to look at bare bosoms, that’s fine by me.
It’s not degrading to women (the girls get highly paid for being photographed), it’s not sexist (boobs just happen to be more attractive than male bits, ask renaissance artists) and why anyone should see attractive bodies as ‘rude’ indicates tome at least that they have their priorities little wrong. As I ranted. At length.
But it seems that the Sun was just messing with us.
Two days after the announcement (which was never verified by the paper itself) the Sun featured a bare-breasted woman on page three. The caption below read “Further to recent reports in all other media outlets, we would like to clarify that this is Page 3 and this is a picture of Nicole, 22, from Bournemouth.”
I’m pleased.
I think that part of my problem was that I didn’t want a 44 year old tradition to be stopped just because a few people complained. A BBC reporter went out into the streets and asked people what they thought and the majority of people saw absolutely nothing wrong with page three.
But it’s even better to know that the Sun has a sense of humour.
